Frequently Asked Questions
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is characterised by ongoing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.
ADHD can be broken down into three subtypes:
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Difficulties with attention are the primary issue. People with this type may struggle with organising tasks, following detailed instructions, and maintaining focus. They might seem forgetful or easily distracted and often overlook details.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Hyperactivity and impulsivity predominate. Individuals may struggle to stay seated, act as if driven by a motor, interrupt others, and have difficulty waiting their turn.
- Combined Presentation: Both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms are equally present and significant.
ADHD symptoms can cause issues in various areas of life, including school, work, relationships, and daily activities. While it’s typically diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can continue into adulthood, and some individuals may not be diagnosed until they are adults.
The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of factors, including genetics, brain structure and function, and environmental influences. Despite misconceptions, ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, excessive sugar, or vaccines.
Treatment for ADHD often involves a combination of medication, psychotherapy (such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), educational support, and lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and sufficient sleep. With the right support and treatment, individuals with ADHD can lead successful, fulfilling lives.
