Grief and loss counselling

“The only cure for grief is to grieve."

— Earl Grollman

Grief and loss

Grief is an experience like no other. It takes us to the edge of humanity and can feel completely overwhelming. There is no right way to grieve. Grief is not linear or predictable – it is an entirely unique and personal experience.

Whatever loss you have experienced, or however long ago, I can support you through your grief and navigate life after loss at a pace that feels right for you.

If you are grieving an anticipated loss, I can help you care for yourself and find comfort through the pain and complexity of a goodbye.

How I can help

I can support your individual journey with compassion, patience, and care.

I can help you work through the pain, devastation and the maelstrom of emotions which can arise from loss or anticipated loss — like sadness, regret, anger, fear, and guilt. At your pace, we can make sense of your loss and its impact on you. I will guide, support, and hold you emotionally through this process and help you with tools to process grief and find your way after loss. When you’re ready, we can work together to plan what comes next.

How we might work

I’ll create a safe space for you to talk — I’ll listen and hear all that you need to say. That might be an outpouring of love for someone you’ve lost. It might be anger at the unfairness. It might be a confusing jumble of overwhelming emotions that are eating you up. You can express what may have felt unspeakable, unbearable, or uncomfortable. I’ll be alongside you.

We’ll work together to help you make sense of what you’re going through. We might develop ways to cherish and remember the departed and your relationship with them. Perhaps you need some coping mechanisms for times of distress, and strategies to deal with anniversaries and occasions. You may want to learn about the different stages of grief and ways others have found to cope. We might identify the ‘shoulds’, ‘musts’, and expectations about how to grieve and how long for which so often add to the distress of an already devastating experience.

If you are feeling numb we’ll experiment with ways to help you get in touch with your emotions again and how to tolerate them. It might be helpful to explore how the circumstances and context of your particular loss are impacting you – such as your relationship, faith, family, and financial factors. We’ll acknowledge what else you’ve lost e.g. security, hope, connection, love, trust, fearlessness, and how to navigate these secondary losses. If you experienced trauma as part of the loss, we’ll address your trauma reaction and how to process and reduce its impact.

I’ll support you to identify, express, and be present with your feelings so that you feel less controlled by them. We might find ways of holding onto the memory of the departed without it devastating and debilitating you. We might develop rituals and rites of passage. Only when you’re ready, we can explore how you stay connected to the departed and reorient to life and grow around your grief.

If you are experiencing living grief, we might explore how to identify your needs and care for yourself, how to prepare for loss, how to cherish your relationship in the time you have left, and how to say goodbye.
